Exploring Public Reasoning Infrastructure for the Digital Age
Made for a world flooded with information, where certainty is often manufactured and truth is increasingly contested - a system for structured reasoning and evidence-based analysis.
An independent non-profit foundation for the digital civic era - addressing civic societies where reasoned judgement matters.
“Not telling people what to think, but enabling them to think better.”
Context · Why now
Modern societies increasingly depend on digital information environments that shape public reasoning, trust and collective decision-making. SocratesApp explores whether structured reasoning frameworks, supported by artificial intelligence and transparent evidence mapping, may contribute to more coherent, evidence-based and intellectually disciplined civic discourse.
Inquiry
What would it mean to examine public claims not only for truth, but for coherence?
To sit with a question, rather than rush to an answer.
I · Origins
A contemporary translation of the Socratic method - rendered as digital systems for the structured examination of claims.
Σωκρατική μαιευτική the art of intellectual midwifery
Founded in the UK as a public-interest initiative exploring structured reasoning for the digital civic era.
SocratesApp draws inspiration from the Socratic method - a process of inquiry grounded in questioning, reasoning, and the systematic examination of assumptions.
The project seeks to translate this approach into a contemporary context through the design of digital systems that facilitate structured reasoning.
Rather than acting as a source of conclusions, SocratesApp is intended to function as a framework within which claims can be examined, evidence assessed, and reasoning made transparent.
II · Mission
SocratesApp is envisaged as a public-interest initiative focused on the development of systems that support structured reasoning, critical inquiry, and the transparent evaluation of claims.
Its purpose is not to provide answers, but to facilitate clearer thinking - through verifiable evidence and logically coherent analysis.
Inspired by the Socratic tradition of inquiry - and in particular the method of maieutics (Σωκρατική μαιευτική) - the platform aims to provide a neutral and transparent framework for examining public claims, narratives, and complex issues.
III · Commitments
Four commitments that frame every aspect of the project - the boundaries within which our work is conducted.
No political alignment or advocacy.
No privileging of ideological, philosophical, or religious viewpoints.
Emphasis on verifiable information and structured analysis.
Designed to support informed civic understanding.
IV · Practice
Translating the principles into practice requires a transparent method, an organisation aligned with the public interest, and an honest account of where the work currently stands.
Approach
The development of SocratesApp combines:
Governance
The organisation has been structured to support:
Current focus
At present the work is concentrated on:
V · System
SocratesApp is being developed as a system capable of:
I
Structuring arguments and claims
II
Linking assertions to verifiable evidence
III
Enabling transparent reasoning pathways
IV
Supporting the critical evaluation of complex issues
The focus is not on generating conclusions, but on making the process of reasoning itself visible and examinable.
VI · Dialogue
SocratesApp is currently in an early development phase and open to dialogue with individuals and institutions interested in:
We welcome conversations with researchers, civic-minded technologists, philosophers of science, journalists, and institutions whose work intersects with reasoned public discourse.
We are currently interested in connecting with individuals working at the intersection of AI, reasoning systems, civic technology, and public-interest digital infrastructure.
